Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda told MCV that the company does not plan to implement microtransactions to its “console” games. Yosuke Matsuda claimed that players have different expectations for console – and PC – games and microtransactions simply do not fit.
“The way that console games are made, the volume of content, and how much effort goes into them, there’s something in that which doesn’t fit in the mind with microtransactions.”
However, Square Enix is really open to releasing more content – in the form of DLCs – for its single-player games. Moreover, Matsuda claimed that Square Enix still has to think how to enhance its games, and how to let players share the experience with each other.
As such, it comes as no surprise that the PC version of Final Fantasy XV will support mods. Square Enix will obviously try to experiment with the modding community in order to see whether ‘players will share the experience with each other‘ and whether these tools will ‘enhance‘ the game itself.
Furthermore, Square Enix considers the PC platform to be really important to it. In an interview with the Telegraph, Matsuda stated that the PC is essential to Square Enix.
It’s also worth pointing out that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided had microtransactions. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether Matsuda is talking about future SE games or not. Or perhaps he’s referring to Square Enix’s Japanese console/PC games.

While he is a die-hard PC gamer, his gaming roots can be found on consoles. John loved – and still does – the 16-bit consoles, and considers SNES to be one of the best consoles. Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2.
