AMD has just released its second generation Ryzen CPUs, the AMD Ryzen 7 2600X and the AMD Ryzen 7 2700X. However, and as you may have already noticed, there isn’t a new version of the Ryzen 7 1800X anywhere to be found.
During its pre-launch event, AMD’s Jim Anderson revealed that the company may someday release an updated version of the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X, which will be obviously called AMD Ryzen 7 2800X.
Anderson explained the lack of a 2800X by saying that both the AMD Ryzen 7 2600X and the Ryzen 7 2700X have covered all current performance and price points.
“We felt like, with the 2700X and 2700 at the performance and price points, we had that space covered. We just felt that with those two SKUs we had it sufficiently covered where we wanted to position the product.”
It is rumoured that Intel may release a mainstream 8c/16t CPU later this year, so perhaps AMD is preparing its 2800X to rival Intel’s upcoming CPU? Could be possible. As Anderson concluded.
“That doesn’t preclude a 2800X someday, right, maybe. But for now we believe those two SKUs cover the space well.”
