The first Mafia is a game that a lot of PC gamers adore and would love to see it being remastered or remade. And while there aren’t currently any plans for a remake, Environment Artist Oleg Demchenko has recreated a scene from it in Unreal Engine 4.
Demchenko has used Voxel Global Illumintaion 2.0 (VXGI) in order to increase the image quality of this Mafia fan remake, and the end results are amazing. However, it is said that performance is not that optimal as the scene was running with 15-20fps on a laptop equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX1070.
The good news here is that Demchenko has made this map available to the public, meaning that you can go ahead, download and see for yourselves what a possible remake of the first Mafia in Epic’s Unreal Engine 4 could have looked like.
VXGI was meant to significantly increase the quality of games/applications when it was announced in 2015. Unfortunately, though, there haven’t been a lot of games using this technique. Hell, I can only remember Rise of the Tomb Raider Kingdom Come Deliverance using VXGI (and I think Miscreated?) and nothing more. And to be honest, with developers now focusing on real-time ray tracing, I don’t expect any developer to give VXGI a chance.
But anyway, those interested can download the Mafia scene remake in Unreal Engine 4 from here or here.
Enjoy!
