X’s members ‘Vinícius Medeiros’ and ‘frankybuster’ shared yesterday videos, showing classic PSX games running with 60fps on PC via emulation. This was achieved by overclocking the CPU of the PlayStation, something that a few PSX emulators currently offer. And, since I’m a big retro fan, I had to share these videos with you. So, let’s take a look at them.
The good news here is that a lot of PSX games have an unlocked framerate. This means that by simply overclocking its CPU, you can achieve higher framerates. In other words, you won’t need any 60fps patches as the games are not locked at 30fps.
Now before continuing, know that some games have their physics logic tied to their framerates. As such, some games will not feel right when you overclock the CPU. Take for example WipeOut. You can clearly see that the vehicle movement is “faster” with 60fps. This wasn’t how the game was meant to be played.
With this out of the way, let’s take a look at the games that work properly with 60fps. Alien Resurrection, Blade, Quake 2 and Duke Nukem 3D were the games that Vinícius Medeiros and frankybuster shared. And… just look at them. They look so good at 60fps.
There are some PS1 games that presents this interesting quirk where if you overclock the system, you can achieve high framerates without affecting the game's overall logic/speed
Alien Resurrection is one example where you can achieve 60fps via overclock without side effects. https://t.co/hk7pDzU1D4 pic.twitter.com/o4vowIS8M3

The PS1 version of Quake 2 has this too, it's possible to run it at 60fps via overclock without issues. pic.twitter.com/COdaREhxGk

I forgot to mention one special case, the PS1 port of Duke Nukem 3D
This version has abysmal performance by default, but doing an overclock not only delivers stable performance, you can run it at 120+ fps with no issues

For those wondering, Duke Nukem 3D could drop to 12fps on the original PlayStation console. And no, this isn’t a joke. Some games ran THAT bad.
The above videos made me search for even more PSX games that can run at 60fps. So, I’ve included below 60fps videos for Loaded, Silent Hill, Road Rash, Exhumed/Powerslave, and Star Wars: Dark Forces.
All of these games had major performance issues on PSX. Loaded could drop to 15fps at times in chaotic scenes. So, watching them running with 60fps is a beauty to behold. I mean, look at Road Rash. It looks soooooooooooo good at 60fps. And I’ve never seen Quake 2 run this good on PSX.
This right here is another reason why emulators are so important. By using them, you can finally enjoy some classic console games. Hell, you can even get a better gaming experience. After all, it was impossible to get this kind of performance on the real PlayStation console.
PSX is not the only console that PC gamers can overclock via emulators. You can do something similar for Nintendo 64 and Dreamcast. Hell, you can even overclock the SNES to get faster framerates in the games that used the SuperFX chip.
Enjoy the videos and stay tuned for more!
