The Wayward Realms feature-2

Unreal Engine 5-Powered Spiritual Successor to The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, The Wayward Realms, Gets First Pre-Alpha Gameplay Trailer

In August 2021, we informed you about a new open-world fantasy RPG from the original creators of the Elder Scrolls games. And today, OnceLost Games released the first pre-alpha gameplay trailer for it.

As said, this is a pre-alpha trailer. In other words, it does not represent the quality of the final product. Still, it can at least give you an idea of what OnceLost Games aims to create.

OnceLost Games is led by Ted Peterson & Julian Lefay, lead developers of the team behind the original Elder Scrolls, Arena and Daggerfall. The game aims to bring the “old-school” design philosophies of classic RPGs together with the latest technology and quality of life improvements of UE5.

Now as you will see, the framerate in this trailer is all over the place. Again, this is a pre-alpha trailer. So no, performance will not be that bad when the game comes out.

OnceLost Games has also launched a Kickstarter campaign for The Wayward Realms. The team aims to raise 463K euros in the next 29 days. From what I can see, they have already raised 125K in just a couple of hours. So, we can safely say that this game will be funded in the blink of an eye.

Following the Kickstarter campaign, the devs will be working on an Early Access build for a year. However, they cannot guarantee that the Early Access will be ready at the end of that year, and it might take a little longer to finish up. So, basically, the game will hit Early Access sometime in 2025 (though there is a chance that it might slip into 2026). Thus, you should be expecting a full release anytime soon.

The game aims to have big cities with hundreds or thousands of NPCs, deep, dark, dangerous forests, gigantic mountain ranges, sprawling swamps, marshlands and vast oceans. Moreover, the devs will use dynamic procedural generation tools in order to create these areas.

The devs also claim that The Wayward Realms will have a constantly evolving story. The game will have a virtual Game Master that will keep things interesting for players, making other characters and their factions react and plot their next move based on your actions. World events will also have very different effects in the life of a socializing aristocrat, a thief entrenched in underworld conspiracies, a scholar collecting ancient artifacts, or whatever role you craft for yourself.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
