Last week, KOEI Tecmo released a PC demo for Dynasty Warriors: Origins. As such, we’ve decided to test it and share our initial PC performance impressions. So, let’s see how the game runs on a high-end PC system, shall we?
For these initial benchmarks, we used an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D with 32GB of DDR5 at 6000Mhz, and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090. We also used Windows 10 64-bit, and the GeForce 566.14 driver. I know there is a new driver for the game. Still, overall performance seemed already great. Moreover, we’ve disabled the second CCD on our 7950X3D.
Contrary to the previous Dynasty Warriors games, Origins supports framerates higher than 60FPS. And, at Native 4K/Max Settings, the game ran with over 100FPS at all times.
To be honest, I was a bit concerned at first. You see, the first in-engine cut-scene ran with 50-55FPS on our PC system. During that cut-scene, our GPU usage was at around 35%, indicating a CPU bottleneck. And while the game seems to be heavy on the CPU, during gameplay, it can run smoothly with high framerates on the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D.
During the chaotic battles, the lowest we saw was around 110FPS. In those scenes, our GPU usage dropped below 94% usage, suggesting a CPU bottleneck. For the most, DWO ran with framerates between 120-133FPS.
The good news here is that Dynasty Warriors: Origins seems able to take advantage of more than 6 CPU cores/threads. As you can see in the screenshots, all of the CPU cores of our AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D were put to good use. It’s funny that a KOEI Tecmo game can be better multi-threaded than a lot of other modern-day titles.
Sadly, though, the mouse controls feel bad. Once again, Omega Force is simulating a controller stick for the mouse. I don’t know why the devs are not offering proper raw mouse input. It can’t be that hard to implement. Also, for some really weird reason, the UI is low-res. Even when playing at 4K, the UI looks blurry and awful. This is most likely a bug, so let’s hope that the devs will fix it in the final version.
Overall, Dynasty Warriors: Origins appears to be running great on PC. Well, at least when using a high-end PC system. Truth be told, though, I wasn’t really impressed by its graphics. Don’t get me wrong. This is the best-looking Dynasty Warriors game. However, I didn’t see anything here that could “wow” me. But hey, at least the game runs smoothly so that’s something.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
