Crytek is going Free-To-Play; All Future Games Will Follow This Model

Now here is something interesting and unexpected. In an interview with VideoGamer, Crytek’s CEO Cevat Yerli revealed that all future Crytek games will follow the free-to-play model. According to Yerli, the company is currently in a transitional phase, transitioning from packaged goods games into an entirely free-to-play experience. All Crytek’s future F2P games will be powered by the company’s social gaming platform GFACE.
As Cevat revealed:
“What this entails is that our future, all the new games that we’re working on, as well new projects, new platforms and technologies, are designed around free-to-play and online, with the highest quality development.”
Under other circumstances, this would be considered as an April Fools joke. However, that’s not the case here as Cevat was pretty serious about this change.
It will be interesting to see how this F2P model will be used on consoles. Crytek promised that they’ll keep pushing the graphical boundaries. However, we don’t know how the company will be able to achieve something like that with a F2P title. Not only that, but Yerli insisted that Crytek’s F2P games will be triple-A – with appropriate development budgets of $10 million to $30 million.
Crytek seems convinced that the future of gaming will be based on the F2P model. And it will be interesting to see what they’ll offer us as Warface, the company’s first free-to-play title, looks good but not on par with Crysis 3.
Stay tuned for more!
