Now I’ll be honest here – this does not surprise me at all. In their latest interview with Community Manager Jessica Merizan, Mass Effect 3 Executive Producer Casey Hudson and Lead Writer Mac Walters revealed that the Extended Cut will focus on the Shepard’s companions and not on all those unanswered questions that arose during the last five minutes.
When Jessica Merizan asked about the origins of the ME3 controversy, Walters said:
“I think that when we ended Mass Effect 3, we knew it was going to be the end of Shepard’s story, and in our minds and imaginations, the characters are still going to be together, the characters that Shepard had brought together (assuming you’d kept them alive), and maybe it didn’t come across enough, that those characters still had a future, that they had a hope going forward.”
Hudson added:
“I think one aspect [of the reaction to the ending] is that it’s tough to let go of a storyline and characters that you enjoy, and the endings didn’t really leave a lot of time to say goodbye to the experience, so a lot of people just wanted more closure. Players developed a bond to these characters, they made some big decisions, they feel more of a need to get a sense of what the future holds for the Mass Effect series.”
No Hudson, that was not the biggest issue your fans had with ME3’s ending. Their reaction was towards all those unanswered questions that were introduced in just 10 minutes. Why does the Catalyst child has two voices? Why did the child referred to the Reapers as ‘we’? Why the child was not noticed by anyone else during the whole game? Was this whole thing an Indocrination? How did Shepard survive Harbinger’s beam attack?
Unfortunately, it seems that all those questions will not be answered. It’s pretty obvious that BioWare concentrates on Shepard’s companions with this Extended Cut and won’t explain the most crucial questions.
From the looks of it, players will get some extended endings (note: the endings are the same as before, so don’t expect to see something different) and this time around, players might see what actually happened to the galaxy after Shepard’s death. However, this attempt might give birth to even more questions as BioWare won’t answer all the aforementioned questions about Shepard. And although some people were really attached with their companions, we bet that they’d love to get some explanations about the last events of Shepard’s life, something that might not come after all.
