Valve has just announced its Steam Machines (or as you may all know them, Steamboxes). As its description reads, Steam Machine is a powerful new category of living-room hardware that is on the horizon. There will be various Steam Machines from different manufacturers, and gamers will be able to replace any hardware component at will. Steam Machines will be open to their users, and there won’t be any OS or hardware restrictions/limitations.
As Valve claimed, it wants users to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for them, so we are working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014, all of them running SteamOS.
A hardware beta phase is currently planned to launch at the end of October. Those interested can head over to Valve’s page and complete the registration list. On October 25th, the list will be locked.
In its FAQ, Valve confirmed that there will ultimately be several boxes to choose from, with an array of specifications, price, and performance. Moreover, the prototypes will be released this year, and those participating in the beta phase will be able to share info about their experience and post pictures and opinions online.
Enjoy, and stay tuned for more!

While he is a die-hard PC gamer, his gaming roots can be found on consoles. John loved – and still does – the 16-bit consoles, and considers SNES to be one of the best consoles. Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2.
