Alongside Mad Max and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, an interesting indie sci-fi point & click adventure got released that passed under everyone’s radar. The Brootherhood was kind enough to provide us with a Review code, and below you can read our First Impressions of it (alongside a video showing the game’s first 10 minutes).
Let’s start with the good news. STASIS is a really atmospheric game. The Brotherhood has managed to create some amazing isometric levels, and that’s really something that will impress everyone. In fact, we’d love to see more isometric games powered by the STASIS engine as it can be used in a lot and different ‘game’ themes.
Moreover, the music in STASIS is also top notch. Mark Morgan did an excellent job and the intro music will undoubtedly remind you the one of Aliens (or other similar sci-fi movies).
STASIS is basically a tribute to the classic point & click adventure games. As a result of that, some puzzles don’t really make sense. Without spoiling anything, at one time you have to extend something, then disable it, then take something from it so you can later use it to something else in order to solve a puzzle. The funny thing here is that there is no hint so you can come to that conclusion.
And that’s my biggest gripe with a lot of adventure games. Some of their puzzles simply do not make sense. Instead of thinking themselves about a possible solution, players are forced to go inside the head of the developers. And while this may have worked in the past – as the Internet was not as popular – and thus prolonged the game’s length, it certainly does not work at all in this day and age.
STASIS does not also offer any hints or tutorials. You’ll have to figure out what the icons mean by yourselves. You’ll have to open your inventory (lower left of your screen) yourselves. This may lead to some “trial and error” situations but on the other hand, it’s good to see a game that does not hold your hand. Still, a simple Tutorial would be much appreciated.
If you are fans of point & click adventure games, then you should definitely give STASIS a go. If you are not, then STASIS will not make you fall in love with them. Still, if you are into sci-fi titles, then you should at least watch the video below and decide for yourselves whether you should invest on it or not.
