As promised, Turn10 released Update 15 for Forza Motorsport which adds support for RTGI on PC. Thus, the PC version now supports RT Reflections, RTAO and RTGI. So, it’s time now to benchmark these ray-traced effects and see how the game runs with them on a high-end PC.
For these 4K benchmarks, we used an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D with 32GB of DDR5 at 6000Mhz, and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090. We also used Windows 10 64-bit, and the GeForce 566.14 driver. I know there is a new driver for the game. Moreover, we’ve disabled the second CCD on our 7950X3D.
Without any Ray Tracing effects, Forza Motorsport runs with an average of 112FPS at Native 4K/Ultra with DLAA. With Full RT Reflections and RTAO, our performance drops to 84FPS. And then, with all the Ray Tracing effects enabled, including RTGI, we drop to 55FPS.
Forza Motorsport supports NVIDIA DLSS, but there is only one “Auto” option for it. By enabling it, we were able to boost our performance to 100FPS. That’s with all the RT effects enabled. So, with DLSS, it is possible to run RT Reflections, RTAO and RTGI with high framerates on an NVIDIA RTX 4090.
The problem with RTGI, at least in this game, is that its visual enhancements are not that noticeable. Here are two screenshots at night. The left screenshot is without any Ray Tracing effects, whereas the right is with all the RT effects. In theory, the game should look significantly better at night with RT. However, the visual improvements are minimal at best.
If I had to guess, I’d say Turn10 did an excellent job with the real-time non-RT GI of Forza Motorsport. This is why RTGI does not make a transformational change. That, or there is something really wrong with the RTGI implementation. The point is that a lot believed that RTGI would make a huge difference. It does not. In fact, it’s a bit disappointing
It’s also worth noting that Forza Motorsport does not support DLSS 3 Frame Generation. That’s a shame. With a base framerate of 55FPS, DLSS 3 Frame Gen could improve performance without adding any major input latency issues.
In my opinion, if you own an RTX 4090, you can experiment with RTGI. That is provided you use DLSS Auto. However, don’t expect this to be the next Metro: Exodus Enhanced Edition.
Enjoy!
