Two of the best mods for Doom 2 (and Doom 1) were the Voxel Doom Project and Doom 2 RTX. And finally, a modder has made it possible to play Doom 2 with voxels and full Path Tracing. This is a dream come true for a lot of old-school Doom fans. So, waste no time and download it.
Going into more details, the path-traced renderer of this project is based on Half-Life: Ray-Traced. As such, it should be more advanced than the previous RT/PT Mod we’ve shared.
Also, contrary to the previous Path Tracing Mod, this one uses GZDoom. This may please a lot of gamers who did not fancy PrBoom. And although I’ve finished Doom 2 with Path Tracing, I will, once again, replay it.
As said, alongside the Path Tracing effects, this mod also replaces all 2D sprites with voxels. These voxels look similar to the 2D sprites and give a more 3D-ish look to the game. Seriously, Voxel Doom is one of the best graphics mods for id Software’s classics. Thus, I’m really happy to see it working with Path Tracing. This is exactly what I’ve been asking for a long time.
You can go ahead and download the mod from this link. The mod is compatible with the latest Doom 1 + 2 Steam release. It should also be compatible with the original WAD files, though I’m not 100% certain about it. Either way, make sure to follow its installation guide.
These past few months we’ve shared a lot of RTX Remix Mods for various games. In January 2023, we shared several RTX Remix Mods that are in the works. As such, you can take a look at screenshots and videos for Tomb Raider 2, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Manhunt, and Garfield Kart RTX Remix. Then, in February 2024, we shared videos for Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Unreal, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 and Midnight Club 2. In March 2024, we also shared the first screenshots from the RTX Remix Mod for Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. Finally, you can check out some early RTX Remix videos for Fallout: New Vegas, and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell.
Speaking of Path Tracing Mods for older titles, you might also want to check out the following ones. Modders released demos for their Path Tracing Mods for Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, Max Payne, and Call of Duty 4. Do note that the COD4 Mod is a “proof of concept” demo, and it does not look that great. On the other hand, the RTX Remix Mod for Max Payne looks amazing (at least in my opinion). Let’s also not forget the RTX Remix for COD: WoW. And then we have the RTX Remix Mods for NFS: Underground and Underground 2. Oh, and don’t forget to give a go at this RTX Remix for Unreal Tournament 2004. Finally, you can download Path Tracing Mods for Quake, and Serious Sam.
And that is that. This is the best way to play Doom 2 in 2024. This is the best remaster for it. And it’s completely free to everyone.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
UPDATE:
I’ve just tried the mod and it does not work with the original WAD files. So, to use it, you must use the latest Doom 1 & 2 versions that Bethesda released on Steam.
