Take-Two has announced its fiscal Q1 2020 earnings, revealing that NBA 2K19 has sold nearly 12 million copies. On the other hand, Civilization VI has sold 5.5 million copies. As such, Civ 6 is now considered the fastest-selling game in the series.
Take-Two has also unveiled that Borderlands 2 has sold 22 million copies worldwide on all platforms. In addition, the Borderlands franchise has sold more than 48 million units. However, it will be interesting to see how the next part in the franchise, Borderlands 3, will sell on the PC. After all, Borderlands 3 will be timed-exclusive on the Epic Games Store.
As Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told GamesIndustry:
“I think [the sales boost] is a reflection of the fact that the Borderlands IP is stronger than ever, even though it’s been eight years since the last release. I think there’s a whole new generation of consumers who are super excited about Borderlands. That bodes well as we head into the September release. We’ll see how it does, but we feel really good.”
It’s also worth noting that digitally-delivered net bookings grew, up to $382 million, accounting for 91% of total net bookings. Not only that, but 67% of the total net bookings came from recurrent consumer spending.
What this ultimately means is that Take-Two makesĀ A LOT of money from both GTA V Online and Red Dead Online. So yeah, it appears that the “Games as a Service” approach is exceptionally profitable for the company.
