Experimental indie game Dear Esther recouped its financial backing from Indie Fund in just five and a half hours, soaring to the top of Steam’s sales charts in the process. thechineseroom and Robert Briscoe’s first-person walk-’em-up released yesterday to critical acclaim, picking up glowing reviews from various gaming websites.
Less than 24 hours after its release, Dear Esther has already sold over 16,000 units on Steam.
Originally a mod for Half-Life 2 developed as part of a research project at the University of Portsmouth, this recrafted version of Dear Esther boasts gorgeous vistas constructed by Robert Briscoe, a former environment artist on Mirror’s Edge.
Jessica Curry’s ethereal soundtrack, which has already picked up plaudits and award nominations, is available to purchase via Amazon.
Dear Esther is a ghost story, told using first-person gaming technologies. Rather than traditional gameplay, the focus here is on exploration, uncovering the mystery of a Hebridean island, of who you are and why you are there.
Fragments of story are randomly uncovered when exploring the various locations of the island, making every each journey a unique experience.
