A few days ago, we informed you about DirectSR. Back then, thought that DirectSR was going to rival DLSS/FSR/XeSS, but turns out, we got it wrong. Instead, DirectSR will be just an API and by using it, game developers will be able to implement DLSS/FSR/XeSS.
As Microsoft stated, DirectSR will enable multi-vendor SR through a common set of inputs and outputs. According to MS, this will allow a single code path to activate NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution, AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, and Intel XeSS.
In short, DirectSR will make it easier than ever to support all three upscaling techniques. And, that’s it. DirectSR will be just an API and nothing more.
As we’ve already reported, Microsoft will showcase DirectSR at GDC 2024. On March 21st, Microsoft will hold the “DirectX State of the Union” presentation. During that presentation, attendees will get their first look at DirectSR.
Finally, DirectSR will be available soon in the Agility SDK as a public preview, which will enable developers to test it out and provide feedback.
Before closing, I should note that MS will also introduce an AI-upscaling tech in Windows 11. As we reported earlier this month, the latest Insider Build of Windows 11 has an AI-upscaling setting. This setting seems to be a universal setting, meaning that PC gamers will most likely be able to enable it for all games. Or at least that’s our assumption.
Stay tuned for more!

While he is a die-hard PC gamer, his gaming roots can be found on consoles. John loved – and still does – the 16-bit consoles, and considers SNES to be one of the best consoles. Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2.
