EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 6 has just been released on PC and it has immediately received Mostly Negative Reviews on Steam. The reason behind these negative reviews is a “hidden” requirement for an Epic Games account for playing online.
D3Publisher hadn’t initially included the Epic Games Account as a requirement. We can confirm that prior to the game’s launch, it wasn’t listed. However, now after a thousand reviews, the publisher added that requirement to the Steam store page.
Now I don’t know why all of a sudden EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 6 requires an Epic Games account for online play. All previous EARTH DEFENSE FORCE games worked fine without it. As such, I get the frustration of all PC EDF fans.
The good news is that as with Ghost of Tsushima, you can at least play in Offline Mode without an EG account. Still, one of the biggest features of the EDF is the ability to play with your friends. And, sadly, this isn’t now possible without an Epic Games account.
D3Publisher and SANDLOT have not provided any reason behind this requirement. So yeah, we don’t really know what is going on here. Still, this is something that will put off a number of PC players.
I also don’t expect the teams to remove this requirement. This won’t be similar to what we saw with Helldivers 2. Helldivers 2 was released and worked just fine without a PSN account. On the other hand, EDF 6 requires an EG account for online play from the get-go.
EDF 6 is a fun game and we’ll have a PC Performance Analysis later this week. So, stay tuned for more!
UPDATE:
SANDLOT has issued an update, revealing that it’s currently reviewing and planning changes to the specification that requires sign-in to Epic Games account. Although there is no ETA, the team will continue to work on it as we address the feedback we have received.
