Helldivers 2 releases next month on PC and some PC gamers got annoyed when they found out that the game would be using the nProtect GameGuard anti-cheat. Apparently, this prompted Arrowhead’s technical director to step in and explain why the team has decided to use it.
According to Peter Lindgren, Arrowhead has used an anti-cheat tool in this co-op/PvE game for two reasons. The first is because it wants to protect its users from cheaters who can ruin their progression. The second is due to the Galactic War mode.
As the developer explained:
“There’s this huge metagame going in the cloud which all players (and game clients) participate in. Even though we have other countermeasures in place, a cracked game client could make it easier to disrupt the Galactic War, which would sour everyone’s experience.”
For those unaware, nProtect GameGuard is a kernel-level anti-cheat. And no, nProtect GameGuard is not the only one. In fact, most anti-cheat run at “kernel-level”, especially all of the popular ones.
Lindgren claims that the anti-cheat will be uninstalled once players decide to uninstall the game. So no, this program won’t stay on your computer once you’ve uninstalled Helldivers 2. Additionally, the developers claimed that this anti-cheat will not have any negative impact on the game’s performance. And no, GameGuard will not collect any personally identifiable information.
Earlier this month, Arrowhead also revealed the game’s PC requirements. For gaming at 1440p/60fps on High Settings, Sony recommends using an Intel Core i5-12600K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 or AMD Radeon RX 6800. As for 4K/60fps on Ultra Settings, you’ll need an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX.
