Mortal Kombat 1 is currently available to those who have pre-ordered its Premium Edition. And, unfortunately, the game currently suffers from major stuttering issues on PC during its cut-scenes. Thankfully, though, there’s a way to fix these stutters and get a smooth gaming experience.
Let’s start with some good news. Mortal Kombat 1 will pre-compile its shaders the first time you launch it. Thus, you won’t get any shader compilation stutters during gameplay (you hear that Bandai Namco and Tekken 8?).
As said, though, the game has major stutters during its cut-scenes. Seriously, watching the in-game cut-scenes is not enjoyable AT ALL with these stutters. From what we’ve discovered, the stutters are mostly due to the unlocked framerate, and QLOC should implement a framerate limit in order to fix them.
For those unaware, during gameplay, Mortal Kombat 1 is locked at 60fps. When executing the X-Ray and Fatality moves are locked at 30fps. And then, the framerate goes as high as your monitor supports during cut-scenes.
So, how can you fix the game’s stutters? Well, it’s easy. All you have to do is open your NVIDIA Control Panel, choose Mortal Kombat 1 from your program settings, and set your maximum framerate to 60fps. We also suggest enabling V-Sync. Alternatively, you can use MSI Afterburner and Rivatuner to lock the framerate to 60fps. By limiting your framerate to 60fps, you’ll be no longer getting any stutters.
This isn’t a placebo effect. We’ve tested this and we can confirm that it actually works. Here are two screenshots from the intro cut-scene. On the left, we have the vanilla version (notice the spikes/stutters in the frametime graph) and on the right, we have MK1 with the fix.
Lastly, we should note that Mortal Kombat 1 features a built-in benchmark tool on PC. Thus, you can go ahead and take a look at some 8K benchmarks on the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090.
