Intel discontinues the entire 8th-Gen “Coffee Lake-S” lineup of CPUs, including the i7-8700K SKU

Intel recently released a new Product Change Notifications (PCN) for its Coffee Lake-S lineup of processors in which the company has highlighted that it is “discontinuing” the entire Coffee Lake-S series of processors.

The list includes all the 8th-Gen Coffee Lake-S chips, all the way from the “Celerons” up to the Core i7-8700K flagship CPU. The XEON lineup is not included in this list though.

Some SKUs might appear twice, but this is because of the difference between the “boxed” and “tray” chips. Boxed chips are for the DIY market and they come with a CPU cooler included, whereas the tray chips come without any flashy packaging/cooler and these are aimed at OEMs who buy these CPUs in bulk.

Intel has also discontinued a select range of Compute Sticks and NUCs having these 8th-Gen chips. This move doesn’t come as a surprise because the 9’th Gen CPU lineup has already replaced the previous 8’th gen for long, and the 10’th Gen Comet Lake S processors are slowly hitting the shelves. So it makes sense to “discontinue” the previous gen lineup, giving it an EOL (end of life) status of some sort.

Though you can still expect these “discontinued” chips to be sold on some select retail shelves, e-tailers, or even EBay. The discontinuation means no longer shipping the products into distribution, but any previous inventory stock also needs to cleared out. So maybe we can spot the i7-8700K CPU at a bargain price ?

If you are looking to upgrade your CPU or system, then just keep an eye on the current pricing of these 8’th GEN CPUs. Who knows we might find a decent deal after all ? Of course, this is assuming you are really interested in buying these old 8’th gen processors, despite the lineup being succeeded by the 9’th and 10’th generation of processors.
