Next week is going to be one of the most interesting tech weeks of recent years, as both DX12 and glNext will be fully unveiled during this year’s GDC show. And from the looks of it, the Khronos Group may have already revealed – via a recent trademark registration – the official name of its new open sourced API.
As the registration description reads, Vulkan is trademarked for a computer software that is responsible of displaying 2D and 3D computer graphics.
“Computer software, namely application programming interfaces for the purpose of creating, rendering, and displaying 2D and 3D computer graphics; computer software, namely application programming interfaces for the purpose of accessing parallel computing resources; downloadable specifications for the aforementioned goods.”
The above description pretty much describes what an API does, and since Khronos is responsible for glNext, we can safely say that this new version of it will be called “Vulkan”.
We’ll find out more about glNext next week, so be sure to stay tuned for more.
Kudos to reddit’s member ‘blackout24‘ for spotting it!

Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2.
