In case you did not know, I have a very soft spot for 8-bit and 16-bit consoles. So, when I found out that someone was trying to create Nintendo’s and Sony’s canceled SNES CD, I couldn’t help but share it with you. Yes, you read that right. SNES CD may soon become a reality.
For those unaware, SNES CD was the CD add-on that Nintendo and Sony were working on. However, in 1992, Nintendo and Sony decided to cancel that project. Nintendo collaborated with Philips, allowing them to release games based on Nintendo’s franchises on the Philips CDi. On the other hand, Sony took everything it learned and created the first PlayStation console.
Anyway, modder ‘Cosam the Great’ has recreated the PCB of the SNES CD, and is working on getting it to become a real SNES CD. Cosam the Great is the man behind the custom Sega Neptune PCB. So yes, this isn’t a joke. SNES CD may soon become a reality.
From what I know, there is only one game for SNES CD. So, even if Cosam the Great manages to create the SNES CD, it will be useless for most retro gamers. Still, this may open the doors for some new indie SNES CD games. Modders may even port Night Trap (or all the other CDi games) to SNES CD.
As a concept, this is truly amazing. So, I’d really love to see it become a reality. Although I love the SNES, I won’t ever get it. Still, I believe this custom SNES CD deserves the spotlight.
Speaking of SNES, a few days ago, Blur Busters revealed their new CRT simulator GPU shader. This is THE best CRT “filter” I’ve seen. So, I hope that the RetroTink team will release a new version of its upscaler with it. Once they do, I might finally get an SNES (because the old one I have is not working anymore) so I can connect it to my LG CX 65”.
Blur Busters’ CRT simulator GPU shader is a truly awesome shader. And you know what? RetroArch will include this CRT beam simulator mode as a setting in their next public release. As such, you will be able to enjoy it on PC when playing older console games. Again, this is huge news because this is an incredible shader. Just try it for yourselves and see the benefits it brings to the table.
Enjoy!

While he is a die-hard PC gamer, his gaming roots can be found on consoles. John loved – and still does – the 16-bit consoles, and considers SNES to be one of the best consoles. Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2.
