A team of modders is currently working on a fan remake of Phantasy Star Online in Unity3D. This fan remake will be fully playable, and it will come out in 2024. Below you can also find a teaser trailer for it.
Phantasy Star Online Remake is built on top of the MMORPG tech that has been in development in Unity3D for many years. This MMORPG framework has been in development for many years and it’s now in a complete enough state that multiple commercial game titles are being developed using it. Thus, the Phantasy Star Online Remake project can finally benefit from it.
What’s crazy here is that the MMORPG framework has been mainly developed by a single developer. As such, we’re eager to get our hands on it and test it. Seriously, imagine if a single dev has managed to create a robust MMORPG system. This will put to shame most commercial gaming studios.
Phantasy Star Online is an MMORPG that came out on the Dreamcast in 2000. In 2020, SEGA released its sequel, Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis. Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis is a free-to-play game that is currently available on Steam.
Anyway, there isn’t currently any exact date on when Phantasy Star Online Remake will come out. Naturally, though, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
Enjoy the trailer!
