Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is been out for a couple of months now, and so far most people seem to enjoy it. At least more than the recent movie trilogy. The game features an original story within the Star Wars universe during the Order 66 era. The era where Jedi are being hunted and destroyed under the orders of the Emperor.
“I pitched, ‘Hey what if we do a game about Jedi and Force powers?’ They were not super comfortable with that. They threw it back, ‘What about blasters or bounty hunters?'”
According to Stig Asmussen, game director of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Respawn had to convince Lucasfilm in order to make a game with Force users. He talked about the difficulties that came through dealing with Lucasfilm, who basically controls the whole Star Wars universe. He also mentioned that Lucasfilm is very protective of their universe and especially when it evolves around Jedi.
“That’s not the background of the team we’ve built; you might as well ask me and us to start building a racing game at this point. I don’t think anybody’s going to be really happy with the results of that.”
There were two Star Wars games in the works with a bounty hunting theme but both got cancelled. Star Wars 1313 was the first one and more recently the Project Ragtag from Visceral Games, which sadly no longer exists due to Electronics Arts.
“The Jedi is the Holy Grail. To make a game about Jedi you’ve got to earn it. There was a little bit of back and forth, but they could see where I was coming from and said, ‘All right, we can start having a conversation about making a game about Force users, but not Jedi.’ And then the game comes out and its name is Jedi.”
So it seems Respawn made the correct decision, even if bounty hunters are much more likeable right now in the Star Wars movie and TV universe. And that is most probably because of the hit TV series The Mandalorian.

Chris was born in the early 80’s along with the very birth of home gaming. After spending many maaany drachmas on arcades, his father decided to buy him a PC instead of going bankrupt. He lived through the advancing and development of the gaming industry, having played TONS of games on all platforms. He is always honest and will never hesitate to give his true opinion on a game no matter what. Loves stealth games and dislikes microtsansactions, DLC and pre-ordering…who doesn’t after all?!
