Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will not require the 2K Launcher

Firaxis’ community manager has revealed that Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will not require the 2K launcher. Not only that but the team has removed the 2K launcher from the Steam version of Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.

Those who have purchased the game via EGS know that Firaxis will also remove the launcher from it in the future. However, we don’t have an exact ETA on when this will happen.

As he wrote on Reddit:

“Hey all! I wanted to provide a quick update. Earlier today, the 2K launcher has been removed from Civ 6 on Steam, with plans to also remove it on Epic in the near future. I’m also confirming that Civ 7 will NOT utilize the 2K Launcher.

Thanks for your patience and ongoing feedback!”

Now while Sid Meier’s Civilization VII will not utilize the 2K launcher, the game’s Steam store page claims that you will still need a 2K account. So, while the game will no longer launch the 2K launcher, it won’t work without a 2K account. Or at least that’s what the Steam store page hints at.

And that’s my biggest gripe. You see, the main reason a lot of people were annoyed by the EA/2K launchers on Steam was the fact that you had to create a new non-Steam account. That’s the same issue all of us have with Sony’s latest PC releases. It’s not about having two or three launchers. It’s about being forced to create new non-Steam accounts. For instance, if Civ VI launched the 2K launcher without requiring a 2K account, nobody would have an issue with it.

In short, if Civ VII still requires a 2K account, this will be a nothing-burger. Since I own Civilization VI, I’ll re-install it to see whether it requires a 2K account. If it still does, the removal of the 2K launcher is completely pointless.

Civilization VII is the latest game in Firaxis’ strategy series. In this game, you can play as famous leaders from history. You’ll build your civilization by constructing cities and amazing buildings to grow your territory. You can choose to fight or team up with other civilizations as you aim for success. Plus, you can explore unknown lands to expand your empire.

2K Games plans to release Sid Meier’s Civilization VII sometime in 2025. On August 20th, the publisher will also share the first official gameplay trailer.
