Now here is a pleasant surprise. Bohemia Interactive has announced that its massive military sandbox, Arma 3, has sold over half a million units during the Steam Summer Sale 2024.
Arma 3 is like no other game. So, it’s pretty great to see the game still selling well. Seriously, Arma 3 originally came out in 2013. That’s over a decade. And, in a time when a lot of games struggle to come close to 500K sales, this old title has managed to exceed that figure.
Bohemia claimed that the game sold around 100K copies on the sale’s first day. As the team noted, that’s the highest number of copies sold in a single day dating all the way back to the initial Arma 3 Alpha release in March 2013.
This also shows how PC games can have long tails. All publishers have to do is… well… reduce the price to one that will make PC gamers say “Now that’s an offer I can’t refuse”.
Truth be told, Arma 3 has a lot of DLCs from which Bohemia can benefit (financially). Moreover, there isn’t any other game on the market that can come close to Arma 3. So basically, Arma 3 does not have any direct rivals in its category.
It’s amazing that this military game has sold over half a million copies in the last ten years. This success is probably why Bohemia hasn’t rushed to make a sequel. If they made Arma 4 a few years ago, it could have taken away sales from it. So, their gamble seems to have paid off.
Let’s also not forget that Arma 3 looked incredible for its time. This was a Crysis-like game for a lot of people (in terms of graphics). Sure, the game had major optimization issues, especially when it came to CPU utilization. However, it also had graphics that could leave you speechless.
Bohemia is working on a new game called Arma Reforger. This is the latest in the Arma series and lets players be creative and use mods. The game is in Early Access right now. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the “wow” factor that Arma 3 had. Its graphics aren’t that great either. Seriously, some parts of Reforger feel like an enhanced version of Arma 3 instead of a new game. And that’s a real shame.
