A lot of RTX owners were disappointed when Quake 2 Remastered came out and did not support any Ray Tracing/Path Tracing effects. However, things are about to change as Reddit’s mStewart207 is currently working on an RTX Mod for it.
Quake 2 Remastered RTX will have full path tracing effects, and below you can find the first screenshots for it.
Here’s how mStewart207 was able to implement a Path Tracing renderer to the remaster.
“I have been editing the source code to Q2RTX to make it work with these new maps. I had to remove limits on BSP and light list sizes and other things. The original Quake 2 RTX had hard limits on lights per cluster that it would sample from that needed to be increased. When I first got the Machine Games hub level to load up it was super dark because most of the lights were missing because of that limit. The remasters map files just basically work in the Q2RTX engine. I had to do a lot of mixing and matching of old resources vs new resources and adding material overrides. The under water light extinction wasn’t working on the Machine Games maps. For what ever reason, from the new Machine Games BSP files the existing code can’t tell if you are under water the normal way. So I had to do this hacky thing where I got the state from the sever code and sent it to the client. I just need to fix up some newfunctionality they use in the machine games maps.”
Once this mod is complete, the modder will release it on his Github page. Interestingly enough, the official Quake 2 RTX was also updated recently with basic support for loading the new PAK files. As such, Quake 2 RTX may soon support Quake 2 Remastered. Until that – and if – happens, though, you can go ahead and take a look at the following WIP screenshots!

While he is a die-hard PC gamer, his gaming roots can be found on consoles. John loved – and still does – the 16-bit consoles, and considers SNES to be one of the best consoles. Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2.
