Sami Bashir, environment artist at Sledgehammer Games, has shared some beautiful screenshots from a side project he’s been working on. This scene shows Shodan from System Shock 2 being recreated in Epic’s latest engine, Unreal Engine 4.
As Bashir noted, this is his interpretation of what she’d look like if she had merged with the alien biomass from System Shock 2. Bashir worked on it for the last 2 1/2 months in his free time, and the heaviest influences are the key art for System Shock 2, Zdzislaw Beksinski, H.R. Giger, and a little bit of Terry Gilliam.
What’s really interesting here is that the upcoming remake for the first System Shock game is also powered by Unreal Engine 4. However, and contrary to this alternative interpretation, the remake will stay as close to the original material as possible.
Still, it’s really cool witnessing two completely different takes on Shodan. Not only that but back in 2014 we shared a video showing what a System Shock 2 Remake could have looked like in CRYENGINE (so make sure to watch that video too).
Enjoy!

While he is a die-hard PC gamer, his gaming roots can be found on consoles. John loved – and still does – the 16-bit consoles, and considers SNES to be one of the best consoles. Still, the PC platform won him over consoles. That was mainly due to 3DFX and its iconic dedicated 3D accelerator graphics card, Voodoo 2.
