A couple of days ago we informed you about a tool that let you enable UE5’s Lumen in the PC demo of Tekken 8. And, since Tekken 8 will be released tomorrow, we’ve decided to give it a go and share our results.
Now the good news here is that this tool does work. It indeed lets you enable Lumen for both Global Illumination and Reflections. However, the results are mixed right now.
At the end of the article, you can find some comparison screenshots. The vanilla version is on the left, whereas the modded version is on the right.
In the first comparison, you can clearly see the benefits of UE5’s Lumen. The City stage looks way better and more realistic with Lumen. And, to be honest, I prefer that version over what Bandai Namco has achieved with its baked-in lighting.
However, things go downhill once you get to the Cave stage. For whatever reason, Lumen is unable to light up the bricks and the grass in the background. Not only that but the characters also look worse, and less realistic, with Lumen. In this particular stage, Lumen looks worse in every possible way.
Finally, the Forest stage looks really weird with Lumen. With Lumen On, we get fewer shadows, and everything looks kind of flat. This is another stage in which the baked-in lighting provides better results.
So, Lumen does not really bring any major visual improvements to the table. And no, it will not transform the game to what Bandai Namco initially showcased. In short, don’t bother with it. While some stages may look better, most of them will have visual issues. Or at least that’s the results we got from the PC demo.
As we’ve already reported, TekkenOverlay can also allow you to unlock the game’s framerate. And, contrary to Lumen, this feature appears to be working wonderfully. By using this tool, you can set your desired framerate. And, during my testing, everything felt great. However, I should note that you should not use this tool while playing online. You might get banned for using it. So, only use this kind of mods while playing offline.
