AMD Aims To Give OpenGL A Big Boost, “API Won’t Be The Bottleneck”
Well, you gotta love AMD and its engineers. Mantle looks – in paper – amazing, however that’s not the only thing the red team is currently working on. According to Graham Sellers, OpenGL guy at AMD, the red team will be supporting this open API with some high performance extensions that will offer almost similar performance to AMD’s upcoming API, Mantle. AMD clarifies: Mantle is not AMD’s CUDA, Microsoft was well aware of its existence
Another day, another Mantle article. A couple of days ago, French website Hardware interviewed AMD’s Raja Koduri who shared some interesting information about the red team’s upcoming API. According to Raja, Microsoft was well aware of the existence of Mantle. Not only that, but AMD will continue working with Microsoft on all the latest versions of DirectX, just like they’ve been doing this whole time. Mantle will require a GCN architecture GPU to work; not an open standard like OpenCL or OpenGL
You’ve got to love PR marketing. Earlier last week, AMD revealed Mantle. As the red team hinted during its AMD event, Mantle would be compatible with AMD’s GPUs. Despite some websites claiming that this API will be open to other graphics manufacturers, it was recently revealed that Mantle will require cards based on AMD’s GCN architecture to work. AMD and DICE reveal Mantle, low-level graphics API for Radeon cards, offering 9X better performance
DICE’s Johan Andersson revealed today that AMD and DICE are working on a low-level high-performance graphics API for Radeon cards, called Mantle. According to AMD, Mantle offers up to 9X more draw calls per second than other APIs by reducing CPU overhead. This is crucial as according to Johan, this API will be able to finally offer PC gamers proper multi-tasking scaling on the CPU without the need to handle all the background draw calls that the original, old model, requires. AMD Catalyst 13.9 Official WHQL Released
AMD has released a new set of WHQL drivers for its graphics cards. The red team has not released any changelog at the time of writing, but we’ll be sure to update the story the moment it does. According to Guru3D’s member ‘Seren’, this new driver is around a week older than 13.10 beta, and they are on the 150 branch. In short, some frame pacing improvements that are available on the latest beta driver may be missing from this WHQL driver. But then again, a lot of users prefer the WHQL drivers over the Beta ones.
