We bet that a lot of you are wondering how current-generation engines compare to the upcoming, next-generation version of the Unreal Engine, right? Well, time to find out. In this special feature, we compare Crysis 2’s (CryEngine 3) and Skyrim’s engine (the Creation engine) with Epic’s Unreal Engine 4. Although there aren’t similar assets to compare with, we put together screenshots with almost identical scenes. We should also note that for the ‘particles test’ comparison, we used a Crysis shot with an extreme particles mod that is beyond anything we’ve ever seen. We decided to also include a video from this mod, so make sure to watch it and notice how all those sparks are bouncing around without hitting the framerate. So, what do you think? Is Unreal Engine 4 as ‘next-gen’ as you thought it would be? Continue reading Comparison: Next-Generation (Unreal Engine 4) vs Current-Generation (CryEngine 3 / Creation)→
Modder rGOt has released a new version of his mind-blowing Crysis Revival mod for Crysis 2. This mod adopts the environment of Crysis 1 (destructible environment, vegetation touch bending) while keeping the newest technology of the CryEngine 3 (DX11, Texture HD, detail bump mapping, tesselation, Parallax occlusion mapping). The new version of Crysis Revival features extended map, Boids (turtles, crabs…), News vegetation with touch bending (dynamique foliage), New particles, New nano parameters, Decrease in the size of the weapon, News camera movements (first person), Cutscenes, and New ocean effects. You know what? Specular and diffuse maps are perhaps the cleverest things we’ve ever seen in the gaming industry. In case you were unaware of, specular and diffuse maps are usely applied when light is being casted on various textures. Ironically, they are also those that have kept us behind this whole time, as most developers use detailed specular and diffuse maps to ‘hide’ their blurry and low-resolution textures. This can be easily noticed even in Crysis, especially when there is no light to hide the textures of those, infamous rocks. As a result of that, textures in shadow places look flat and blurry as hell. Continue reading This is why we need more than 2GB vRAM in our graphics cards→
We’ve heard a lot of you criticizing CryEngine 3 and believing that CryEngine 2 is better when it comes to its technical features and raw power. We’ve explained how CryEngine 3 is more advanced and that Crysis 2 did not showcase the full potential of Crytek’s next-generation engine. Naturally, some need proof instead of mere words. So look and behold some brand new screenshots from the upcoming CryEngine 3 project, Titanic: Lost in the Darkness. The following, impressive shots show off pure, in-game visuals. Apart from the plants (as we’ve seen better, damn you CryEngine 3 modding community), everything looks spectacular. Especially the lighting and shadows. They almost feel like real photos. Enjoy and keep in mind that CryEngine 3 has tremendous potential. Continue reading New Titanic: Lost in the Darkness screenshots will leave you speechless; CryEngine 3 at its best→
