John Carmack Speaks: 30fps on consoles, 60fps on the PC – Doom 3 levels more taxing than RAGE’s

John Carmack has just revealed in QuakeCon 2012 what we knew all this time. Remember when we were claiming that Doom 3 modded looked better than RAGE? Well, the man himself said that Doom 3 levels were more taxing than the ones of RAGE, especially due to the stencil shadows and its more complex lighting system. This clearly shows that RAGE was dumbed down and was not developed in order to achieve what Doom 3 did a couple of years ago. id Software has trouble porting Doom 3: BFG with 60fps on PS3, more details about its new content

Now this is really shocking. It appears that id Software has trouble porting Doom 3: BFG with 60fps on Sony’s platform and that was revealed by guru John Carmack himself. When a fan asked whether id Software would include some new graphical effects to the PS3 version (like DoF), Carmack said that getting Doom 3 BFG to 60fps on the PS3 is more challenging than most of us would think. Carmack blaimed stencil shadows for it as they are ‘raster pigs’. And obviously, Doom 3 BFG will not include any new graphical features. PS3 gamers, there is no reason to worry though as we bet that Carmack will find a way to overcome those issues. This map comes with custom assets and the level of detail is simply astonishing. This map could very well be a glimpse of how Doom 3 (or even the upcoming new Doom game) would look like in CryEngine 3. CryEngine 3 is an amazing engine with so much potential and we really hope that more developers will license and put it into good use. Enjoy!
