Good news: Keen Software has just announced that its first-person action-survival space simulation game, Miner Wars 2081, has entered its beta phase. Bad news: the latest co-op video does not feature fully destructible environments, something that was advertised as one of the biggest features of this space combat game. Marek Rosa, the creative director of Miner Wars 2081, announced that Keen Software’s 6DOF game will support the Oculus Rift Project and will bring VR to the VRAGE engine. According to Marek, Keen Software is proud to be supporting the Oculus Rift Project as its in-house VRAGE Engine – which powers Miner Wars: 2081 – is already scheduled to implement TrackIR headtracking to better allow players to be immersed in the game. Keen Software has revealed that the official release date for Miner Wars 2081 is scheduled for second half of 2012. The company will announce a ‘more specific’ release date once they arrive at the final test phase. Rather than releasing quickly and all of a sudden, Keen Software would like to ensure the game has been polished and handles well. Instead of rushing to meet the deadlines, they want to move forward with a ‘will release when it is finished’ mentality. Keen Software House announced today their outcomes of GDC 2012 in San Francisco. According to the developers, about 98% of visitors had never heard of Miner Wars before and it seems that everyone loves the idea of Descent + Elite/Freespace + Red Faction combined with a fully destructible environment. In fact, Miner Wars 2081 seems to be the only game in the world with a fully destructible environment as no other comparable game utilizes this feature to such an extent.
