Deep Silver has released some brand new screenshots for their upcoming RPG, Risen 2: Dark Waters. Risen 2 is being developed by Piranha Bytes and features new gameplay elements that add to the diversity of Risen 2; for example, players can also use firearms now. And, being pirates, adventurers can also employ special new skills called Dirty Tricks, allowing them to confuse or attack enemies in combat. The game is currently slated for a 2012 release. Enjoy! Risen was an amazing RPG and a true, spiritual successor to the Gothic series. This time, the developers from Piranha Bytes talk about the different factions in Risen 2: Dark Waters, like the Inquisition and what the disappearance of magic from the world has meant for them, the Natives in their natural habitat, the jungle, and their suppression as slaves in this world, the Pirates who play a central role in the story of Risen 2, and finally, the Gnomes and their enhanced role in Risen 2. Deep Silver and Piranha Bytes today announced the official release date for the epic pirate RPG Risen 2: Dark Waters as April 24th, 2012 for USA and Canada and April 27th, 2012 for countries in Europe. Both companies also revealed the final packshot of the game showing the emblematic pirate Jolly Roger (skull and crossbones) – but with a Risen 2 twist. Deep Silver and Piranha Bytes released the first episode of the ‘making of’ video series for Risen 2: Dark Waters. In this episode, the developers Piranha Bytes lead us on the path of development of a believable fantasy world. Risen 2 looks definitely better than its predecessor, although we can’t say that we are utterly impressed with its visuals. But then again, who cares as both the Gothic series – prior Gothic 4 – and the first Risen were all about their gameplay. And we are pretty sure that Piranha Bytes will deliver once again. Deep Silver announced yesterday at Risen 2’s forum that this much anticipated RPG will actually use Steamworks as its protection system. Deep Silver decided to choose Valve’s DRM was because Steam offers an automated update system which allows all customers to play the latest version of Risen 2 since all patches will be delivered automatically to their PC. Most of you pretty much know what happened with Duke Nukem Forever so we won’t discuss extensively its development cycle. For those that don’t, here is how the story goes more or less. 3D Realms developed the PC version with an enhanced Unreal engine and was shut down, about two years ago. After its closure, Triptych Games decided to continue the game’s development and due to their hard work, the PC version of DNF was almost finished. Gearbox Software then stepped in and acquired the game’s rights. With Piranha Games’ help, the company polished, ported the PC version to consoles and added the multiplayer mode.
