A couple of months ago, we shared some screenshots from a WIP RTX Remix Mod for Tomb Raider 2. And yesterday, modder ‘skurtyyskirts’ shared a new video, showcasing the latest version of it.
Before continuing, this mod is not yet available for download. Not only that but it’s not complete yet. Thus, it does not represent the quality of its final version. With this out of the way, let’s take a closer look at it.
skurtyyskirts used PBRify in order to add some PBR materials to the game’s textures. And, as you will see in some comparison screenshots, the RTX Remix Mod looks way better than its vanilla version. However, some areas appear too dark with RTX Remix. So, to make the game look better, the modder will have to implement some new lights.
This video also highlights some of the challenges modders will have to overcome. These old games were developed with a completely different mindset. Simply adding Path Tracing to them will not get the job done. This is why we’ve only seen, so far, very basic RTX Remix Mods.
Anyway, from what I know, there is no ETA on when the first version of this RTX Remix Mod will become available. As always, though, we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
In January 2023, we shared several RTX Remix Mods that are in the works. As such, you can take a look at screenshots and videos for Tomb Raider, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Manhunt, and Garfield Kart RTX Remix. Speaking of Path Tracing Mods for older titles, you might also want to check out the following ones. Modders have released early demos for their Path Tracing Mods for Tomb Raider, Max Payne and Call of Duty 4. Do note that the COD4 Mod is a “proof of concept” demo, and it does not look that great. On the other hand, the RTX Remix Mod for Max Payne looks amazing (at least in my opinion). Let’s also not forget the RTX Remix for COD: WoW. And then there is this amazing RTX Remix Mod for Need for Speed: Underground 2. Oh, and don’t forget to give a go at this RTX Remix for Unreal Tournament 2004. Finally, you can download Path Tracing Mods for Doom 2, Quake, Half-Life and Serious Sam.
