YouTube’s ‘skurtyyskirts’ has shared two videos, showcasing early versions of RTX Remix Mods for both Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode Two.
Since these mods are still in WIP, they do not represent the quality of their final versions. You can’t even download them. And, as you will see, right now they have some glaring issues.
To create these mods, skurtyyskirts used PBRify to generate normal and roughness maps. My guess is that this tool added such maps to pretty much all textures. As a result of that, some soft surfaces or things can look plastic. Take for instance Alyx’s hair. With the RTX Remix Mod, her hair glows, making it feel plastic. The same can be said about the snow hat that one of the NPCs wears in the Episode Two video.
Now as you will see, these early mods are nowhere close to the upcoming Half Life 2 RTX Remix project. That project aims to be one of the best showcases of what RTX Remix can achieve. Not only that but it has a dedicated team behind it (whereas these mods were created by an individual).
In short, most of you won’t like these two videos. As I said, they are a mixed bag right now. While the lighting is better, it has some graphical issues that need to be addressed. Don’t expect this to “wow” you. So, make sure to temper your expectations. Still, they are cool to share on a Sunday. At least in my opinion.
These past few months we’ve shared a lot of RTX Remix Mods for various games. In January 2023, we shared several RTX Remix Mods that are in the works. As such, you can take a look at screenshots and videos for Tomb Raider 2, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Manhunt, and Garfield Kart RTX Remix. Then, in February 2024, we shared videos for Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Unreal, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 and Midnight Club 2. In March 2024, we also shared the first screenshots from the RTX Remix Mod for Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. Finally, you can check out some early RTX Remix videos for Fallout: New Vegas, Half-Life and Splinter Cell.
Speaking of Path Tracing Mods for older titles, you might also want to check out the following ones. Modders released demos for their Path Tracing Mods for Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, Max Payne and Call of Duty 4. Do note that the COD4 Mod is a “proof of concept” demo, and it does not look that great. On the other hand, the RTX Remix Mod for Max Payne looks amazing (at least in my opinion). Let’s also not forget the RTX Remix for COD: WoW. And then we have the RTX Remix Mods for the first and the second NFS: Underground games. Oh, and don’t forget to give a go at this RTX Remix for Unreal Tournament 2004. Finally, you can download Path Tracing Mods for Doom 2, Quake, and Serious Sam.
Enjoy!
