In December 2023, Nekki announced a cool new game called SPINE. Ironically, a lot of folks thought that it was a fake trailer with pre-rendered footage. As such, Nekki decided to release a new trailer showing actual gameplay. So, let’s take a look at it.
Now as I said back then, SPINE reminded me of Wanted: Dead. And yes, this latest gameplay trailer proves me right. Players can shoot their enemies and dodge their attacks. Then, they can initiate some finishing moves. These finishers are scripted, so they look a bit more polished than everything else in the game. Still, I don’t see anything that can be described as pre-rendered.
SPINE is a single-player game where you play as Redline, a rebellious street artist. Redline will also have a smart combat buddy, Spine. Together, you’ll take on the autocratic AI regime of Tensor Corporation. While you’re fighting the bad guys, you and Spine have to learn to trust each other. As you progress, Redline will get faster and learn new awesome moves. The game even has special camera tricks and cool fighting scenes designed by action movie experts, making you feel like “the hero in your very own action movie.”
As Nekki noted, this gameplay footage is from a really early development build. As such, it does not represent the quality of the final product.
SPINE seems to have an amazing art style and graphics. And the finishers look actually great. However, the melee combat looks rough, and it needs A LOT of work. Right now, your punches and kicks do not seem to properly connect with the enemies. Your melee attacks feel floaty and bad.
Compared to its debut trailer, this new trailer looks EXACTLY the same. Nothing has been downgraded. So, again, I don’t know why people believed this was pre-rendered. All they showed back then were the finishing moves which are scripted events (that occur whenever you kill an enemy).
Anyway, enjoy the trailer and stay tuned for more!
