Over the past year, YouTube’s ‘Denis’ has been working on an HD Remaster of Mortal Kombat 2 in MUGEN. Now what’s really cool here is that Denis has been using AI tools in order to enhance the original 2D sprites of all fighters. As such, the following videos can give you an idea of what an HD Remaster of NetherRealm’s classic fighting game could have looked like.
Since the source code of Mortal Kombat 2 Arcade has been leaked online, I seriously hope that someone will go ahead and create an HD Remaster of it. By using these new high-quality 2D sprites, we can finally enjoy a remastered version of MK2. Seriously, this will be a dream come true.
For what it’s worth, there is a beta version of this MK Mugen game. However, and from what I’ve seen, it does not play as smoothly as the original arcade version.
What’s also cool is that Denis has overhauled some 2D sprites from Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat 1. As such, a Mortal Kombat Trilogy HD Remaster could be possible.
From what we know so far, NetherRealm does not have any plans for HD remasters of these classic games. And, to be honest, that’s a shame. By using AI tools, the team can easily enhance those low-quality sprites, and update them for modern-day displays.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
